The Key Changes to DVSA Test Booking
Starting 12 May 2026, only you – the learner driver – are allowed to book, change, or swap your own car driving test. Your instructor can no longer handle this on your behalf. It is now against the law for anyone else to book or manage a test for you. All bookings must be made directly through the official GOV.UK service.
In addition, a rule that came into force on 31 March 2026 limits the number of changes you can make to a booked test slot to just two (previously up to six). This includes:
- Changing the date or time
- Switching test centres
- Swapping your slot with another learner
If you try to make more than two changes, you’ll need to cancel the booking entirely and start again (you’ll usually receive a refund if you give enough notice). Multiple adjustments made at the same time (for example, date and centre together) count as a single change. Any alterations made by the DVSA itself don’t count against your limit.
These updates apply to existing bookings too – if you had already used your previous allowance of six changes, you still receive a fresh allowance of two from 31 March onward.

- Fewer delays for everyone – By cutting down on repeated rescheduling, the DVSA aims to free up more slots and shorten waiting lists – good news for all learner drivers.
While the changes might feel stricter at first, they encourage smarter preparation and help create a fairer system for everyone on the road.
