There are 6 parts to the B+E trailer test. Its not just about passing the test, we aim to give you the confidence and capability of towing your trailer confidently and successfully. All our driving instructors at P1 drive school are fully approved driving instructors.

At P1 drive school we want to make sure that when you leave here you can take away the skills you require to tow your caravan, horse box or whatever type of trailer you wish to use.

If you already hold the B+E entitlement and would like to complete a trailer course, e.g. purchasing a caravan that you wish to tow but are new to towing or lack confidence, then we have courses that will be tailored to suit your requirements.

DRIVING LICENSE RULES AND WHAT YOU CAN TOW

The rules on what you can tow are different depending on when you passed your driving test:

LICENCES ISSUED FROM 1ST JANUARY 1997:

If you passed your car driving test between 1st January 1997 and 18th January 2013 you can:

1. Drive a car or van up to 3,500kg MAM towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM
2. Tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg.

Should you want to tow anything heavier, you’ll need to pass the car and trailer driving test first.

LICENCES HELD BEFORE 1ST JANUARY 1997:

If you passed your car test before 1st January 1997 you are usually allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg MAM.

You are also allowed to drive a mini bus with a trailer over 750kg MAM.

THE TEST & PRICES

THE CAR AND TRAILER TEST:

There are 6 parts to the driving test:
1. An eyesight check (20 metres)
2. Show me, tell me, vehicle safety questions
3. Reversing your vehicle
4. General driving ability
5. Independent driving
6. Uncoupling and recoupling your trailer

You will drive for 50 minutes.

PASS MARK:

You will pass your driving test if you make:
1. No more than 15 driving faults (minors)
2. No serious driving faults

Refresher course 3 hours £120
If no test required

Assessment 2 hour lesson £80
This is to work out how many lessons you will need to take before test

5 hour course £240
10 hour course £480

The driving test fee is £115
